چکیده

We report 349 radial velocities for 45 metal-poor field red giant and red horizontal branch stars, with time coverage ranging from 1 to 21 years. We have identified one new spectroscopic binary, HD 4306, and one possible such system, HD 184711. We also report 57 radial velocities for 11 of the 91 stars reported on previously by Carney et al. (2003). All but one of the 11 stars had been found to have variable radial velocities. New velocities for the long-period spectroscopic binaries BD−1 2582 and HD 108317 have extended the time coverage to 21.7 and 12.5 years, respectively, but in neither case have we yet completed a full orbital period. As was found in the previous study, radial velocity “jitter” is present in many of the most luminous stars. Excluding stars showing spectroscopic binary orbital motion, all 7 of the red giants with estimated MV values more luminous than −2.0 display jitter, as well as 3 of the 14 stars with −2.0 < MV ≤ −1.4. We have also measured the line broadening in all the new spectra, using synthetic spectra as templates. Comparison with results from high-resolution and higher signal-to-noise (S/N) spectra employed by other workers shows good agreement

Fast Winds and Mass Loss from Metal-Poor Field Giants

Echelle spectra of the infrared He I λ10830 line were obtained with NIRSPEC on the Keck 2 telescope for 41 metal-deficient field giant stars including those on the red giant branch (RGB), asymptotic giant branch (AGB), and red horizontal branch (RHB). The presence of this He I line is ubiquitous in stars with Teff & 4500K and MV fainter than −1.5, and reveals the dynamics of the atmosphere. The...

Deep HST V - and I-Band Observations of the Halo of M31: Evidence for Multiple Stellar Populations

We present deep (V ≃ 27) V and I -band stellar photometry obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope’s WFPC2 in two fields in the M31 halo. These fields are located 32 and 50 from the center of M31 approximately along the SE minor axis at the locations of the M31 globular star clusters G302 and G312 respectively. The M31 halo luminosity functions are not consistent with a single high-metallicity...

Deep Acs Imaging of the Halo of Ngc 5128: Reaching the Horizontal Branch

Using the HST Wide Field Camera (WFC) of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), we have obtained deep (V, I) photometry of an outer-halo field in NGC 5128, to a limiting magnitude of I ≃ 29. Our photometry directly reveals the core helium-burning stellar population (the “red clump” or horizontal branch) in a giant E/S0 galaxy for the first time. The color-magnitude diagram displays a very wide ...

Observations of Chromospheres in Metal Deficient Field Giants

HST high resolution spectra of metal-deficient field giants more than double the stars in previous studies, span ∼ 3 magnitudes on the red giant branch, and sample an abundance range [Fe/H]=−1 to −3. These stars, in spite of their age and low metallicity, possess chromospheric fluxes of Mg II (λ2800) that are within a factor of 4 of Population I stars, and give signs of a dependence on the meta...

Mass Outflow and Chromospheric Activity of Red Giant Stars in Globular

High resolution spectra of 123 red giant stars in the globular cluster M13 and 64 red giant stars in M92 were obtained with Hectochelle at the MMT telescope. Emission and line asymmetries in Hα, and Ca II K are identified, characterizing motions in the extended atmospheres and seeking differences attributable to metallicity in these clusters and M15. On the red giant branch, emission in Hα gene...
